Eat Your Way to Glowing Skin
Beauty products don’t come cheap and many of us are guilty of buying bottle after bottle, all in the hope of giving our skin that allusive glow. When it comes to achieving healthier looking skin, what you're putting in your body can be just as important as what you're putting on it. Try adding some of these skin-boosting foods into your daily diet instead. The secret to a clear complexion could be on your plate after all!
Omega-3 fats
It’s time to give fish and chips Friday a healthy upgrade! Swap your chips for sweet potato wedges and put an oily fish such as salmon or mackerel on the menu. They are both great sources of omega-3 fatty acids which will help keep your skin looking clear and reduce your chance of suffering with chronic acne. Oily fish also boasts high levels of vitamin D and selenium, which protects the skin from the sun's harmful UV rays. For the veggies and vegans out there, try throwing some walnuts into your lunchbox instead to get your daily dose of omega-3's.
Berries
Berries are one of our favourite ingredients for throwing into shakes or for decorating Instagrammable bowls of zoats. Luckily for us they are loaded with antioxidants, known to do wonders for your skin, and the anthocyanin found in blueberries, raspberries and strawberries can help reduce the signs of ageing. Swing by the Neat Café for a Pretty in Pink berry shake - getting the glow has never tasted so good!
Hydrate
Who knew expensive anti-ageing serums could be replaced by just turning on the tap? Your body is about 70% water so it’s no wonder getting in those 8 glasses a day is necessary to boost your circulation and help remove toxins, keeping your skin from getting dry and flaky. Throw some extra hydrating cucumber and lemon into your water bottle for a refreshing hit.
Turmeric
Turmeric lattes and golden milks have taken the health and fitness world by storm, so you’ll be relieved to know all those yellow lattes you’ve been drinking could be helping to clear your complexion. The anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric can help alleviate any underlying problems that have left your skin looking dull and lifeless. Don’t fancy the idea of a spicy yellow latte? Give your skin a boost by popping a teaspoon into your favourite curry recipe instead.
Broccoli
Did your Mother always tell you to drink your orange juice to get your Vitamin C? Well this popular green vegetable is an amazing low-sugar alternative to oranges, with about half a cup of raw broccoli containing 65% of your daily needs, great for aiding collagen production. Not to mention it’s also packed full of antioxidants and contains Vitamin E to help to guard against UV radiation damage – bring on the broccoli!
Green Tea
This wonderful bright green powder really packs a nutritional punch, and just one cup of Matcha can contain as many antioxidants as ten cups of green tea! As well as tasting delicious, it’s well known for it’s anti-ageing properties and ability to fight free radicals, as well as providing a steadier energy boost with little crash as opposed to the caffeine in coffee. It’s the perfect morning drink to give you a natural buzz and help you clear that mounting inbox in no time!
