As much as Christmas is a time of joy and festivities, there’s a scarier side to the holiday fun… having lunch with your in-laws, getting into work after the office Christmas party, and dealing with the impact of your antics on your mental and physical health. If like us, your diary is more parties than gym sessions in the lead up to Christmas, it’s probably wise to do some ‘damage control’ and try to make some smart decisions at the bar. Here are our top picks of the healthiest alcoholic drinks available…
Clear Spirits
Clear spirits such as gin, vodka, and tequila – drank neat (pun intended!) or mixed with lime & soda - are our top alcoholic option. They're low-calorie and much lower in sugar than sugary cocktails or fizzy drinks.
Red Wine
Surely we're not the only ones who've read endless blogs and press releases touting the benefits of red wine. Unfortunately, this is rather wishful thinking, and we’re not going to sit here and tell you how beneficial it is for your health. It does, however, contain the antioxidant resveratrol, which is what gives it it’s dark red colour. In addition to this, a lot of the sugar (from the fruit) is converted to alcohol during the fermentation process, making red wine a lot lower in sugar than that tempting eggnog.
Light Beers
We know it's hard to hear, but beer is made with grains and is therefore very high in carbs and sugar. If you’re a beer fan, try switching to a light larger or beer. Once you've got through a couple, you'd hardly notice the difference...
